The Illinois Department of Public Health announces that 16 people are under investigation, in regard to an Acute Flaccid Myelitis in Illinois this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already confirmed 3 cases in Illinois, with one classified as probable AFM, and 2 declared not with AFM cases. 10 cases remain under investigation. The 16 individuals are from northern and central Illinois, with all but 1 patient being under 18-years-old. Additional information, including specific locations are not available at this time. The IDPH will continue their work with healthcare providers in order to collect necessary information, and send that info to the CDC, and decide whether or not the information will be classified as AFM. The department continues to encourage that residents report suspected cases to their local health department. AFM is a very rare neurological condition, with the underlying cause or causes not known. CDC has been actively investigating AFM and will continue to receive information about suspected AFM cases.
