The Ashley School Board of Education met last night and they went over the 2013 State Report Card and approved it.  Superintendent Brian Hodge says for the 1st time in many, many years, the school did not meet the Adequate Yearly Progress standards in reading and mathematics.  He believes, as do most educators and school administrators, that the new common core standards make it difficult to attain these standards, but they will be working to meet the standards in the future, despite testing methods changing again this year and next year.  Enrollment is at 175 students in kindergarten through 8th grade.  Hodge says they receive 42 percent of their funding through local taxes with 32.2 percent from the General State Aid Fund.  Although, he says they have been receiving about 89 percent of what is expected from that fund, next year they will only receive 85 percent of what is expected or owed.  They discussed a tentative tax levy of the usual 2.35 percent with a public hearing on Monday, November 25th at 5:20 PM to be followed by the regular Board Meeting.  Hodge says they went over the 10-year Health –Life Safety Survey, which was done by an architect and there are some things to address, but they feel the custodial staff can take care of these issues.  They tabled a discussion about additional basketball uniforms at this time.  Some individuals were approved to head up some of the pee-wee sports activities, which is for grades 1 through 4.  For basketball, Chrystal Barbee, Melissa Sanders and Jeff Pelka were appointed, while Charity Stofferahn was named to lead cheerleading.
