The Nashville High School Board of Education met last night.  There was a resignation from Library Aide Bridget Brink, effective today.  The Board accepted this move.  Also, Michelle Goosetree is resigning as the co-sponsor of the Scholar Bowl team and Lauren Cleeton is resigning as the Math Team sponsor, but will remain the Scholar Bowl head coach.  The Board accepted both of these moves.  Superintendent Wendy Davis told the Board that the WYSE Team place 1st in the regional and will compete at State next month.  Later in the meeting, the Board approved that 2-day field trip in April for 14 students.  She then talked about the Round 1 of the Maintenance Grant they applied for and they have gotten the $50,000, which is a matching grant, but the amount of needs will require the school to put up nearly $59,000.  This is to remove tile in the science rooms and replace the floor, some roofing work, concrete work in the back of the school, as well as at the football field and an HVAC system for the electronics room.  They also applied for the 2nd round of Maintenance Grants, as that is leftover or pooled money.  The Sports Booster Shootout brought in $4,157.40 for the organization.  She talked about the successful blood drive earlier this month, where there were approximately 90 pints of blood donated, up nearly 30 from last year.  English instructor Jennifer Olson wants to apply for an Illinois Arts Council Grant to help pay for Shakespearean actors to come to the school and perform and work with the students.  It is a matching grant, but there are community groups that would pay the matching part.  The 1 to 1 Committee is nearly complete and they will be meeting and hope to have a proposal of some sort for the next Board meeting on April 28.  This is to get to the point where every student has a laptop.  The Board agreed to physically amend the school calendar to the days being in school during Spring Break, which will be students getting out at 2:10 PM on Thursday, April 17th and it will run through April 21st with school beginning on the Tuesday.  As a formality, the Board had to approve the renewal to the Illinois High School Association for the next school year.  School fees were briefly discussed and tabled for next month.  Davis said the technology fee is $15 and that might be something they look at changing in the future, especially as the things could change.  The clothing class has an expense for some materials that the students are using.  So a fee of $10 is desired.  The science teachers said a $6 fee is desired for the environmental class.  Materials for manufacturing systems and a technology class are increasing, so those teachers are seeking a $5 increase to $30.  Davis says there is legislation about high schools requiring students to take an additional year of math and science.  Davis talked about how this is not necessarily good legislation for high schools and students, as the students already planning to go to college are taking the classes and are being accepted.  Those students only planning on a certificate or some other program or going right into the work force will benefit more from some electives that better prepare them for those pathways, but may not be able to get what they need, if they are required to take an additional math and science class.  After closed session, the Board made some personnel decisions.  As some teachers are paid with grant funds, the school has to reduce them until the grant money comes in.  This was the case last night with Tim Kuhn and Bethany Hinkle, but they were rehired.  Also, Ericka Niedbalski, a Social Studies teacher, was rehired but with 1 less class.  Many were all hired back, including some non-tenured teachers.  Sara Kollbaum has been rehired as a full-time teacher for next year, as she had been part-time.  Also, Nurse Kim Kell was hired back as a certified school nurse.  There were no other changes in any athletic coaching at this time and all the non-athletic extra-curricular activities will be back as sponsors, except for those mentioned earlier in the meeting.  Also, Jessica Ibendahl will be a volunteer track coach and Steven Kurwicki as a volunteer JV baseball coach.  Announcements included the Fine Arts & Vocational Festival is Thursday at the high school and will include several displays from feeder schools and other schools, including musical performances.  The girls’ basketball awards night is tonight and the boys’ basketball awards program is next Tuesday night.  This semester’s play is Nicholas Nickelby, which is April 4th through the 6th.
