A man from Mt. Vernon was sentenced last week, inside the Jefferson County court to 21-years in prison, after he agreed to a negotiated plea on several felony cases against him. One of those charges included holding a woman hostage in her home at gunpoint. 28-year-old Joseph Welch was charged in the case with a Class X felony of armed home invasion, along with a Class 1 felony for residential burglary. He pled guilty to the Class X felony of home invasion, in exchange for the Class 1 felony being dismissed. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, back in November 2017, a woman came to their office and reported that she was held at gunpoint along Nason Lane. Initially, Treva Miller of Ina, was arrested in the case, but deputies continued their search for a 2nd person. Miller plead guilty to the home invasion charge this past summer, which led to a 21-year prison sentence. Welch was already facing charges in Jefferson County, in regard to leaving an accident, receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle and for delivery of methamphetamine. The meth case was also dismissed during the plea agreement, but he received a 3-year term and a 1-year term on the stolen vehicle and accident cases.
