JEFFERSON COUNTY — Two juveniles have been arrested in connection with the shooting Wednesday night of two construction workers on Interstate 57 near Dix.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard, two IDOT workers were shot and injured while working at the Dix/Irvington Road exit off I-57. Both workers were airlifted to St. Louis area hospitals for treatment. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Sheriff’s Detective Bobby Wallace says 911 received a call around 9:14 p.m. Wednesday from the contractor working on the Dix/Irvington Road overpass project reporting two workers had been shot. Wallace says a female flagger has a head injury and a male supervisor suffered a chest injury. The weapon used, he says, appears to have been a high-powered air rifle.

An investigation quickly revealed the shots were likely fired from a home in the 900 block of Adams Street in Dix. However, the occupants refused to come out when deputies went to the door. In response, the High-Risk Team armored vehicle was brought out and the occupants then agreed to exit the residence. A search warrant was obtained and the home was searched. The search reportedly revealed several weapons in the home, along with the suspected air rifle that was seized as evidence.

Two 12-year-old male subjects were taken in for questioning and were ultimately released to their guardians. The incident remains under investigation.
