JACKSON COUNTY — One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Jackson County.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, around 1:50 p.m. deputies responded to a crash on Old Highway 13, near Wood Road, in rural Carbondale. It was reported one vehicle had rolled over and the occupants were entrapped.

A preliminary investigation showed that a black 2020 Alfa Romeo, driven by 34-year-old Joe Love of Murphysboro, was westbound on Old Highway 13, just east of Wood Road. At the same time, a white 2010 Toyota Corolla, driven by 45-year-old Barbara Perkins of Carbondale, was exiting a private drive. The Corolla pulled out and into the path of the Alfa Romeo. The Alfa Romeo struck the Corolla, lost control, impacted a utility pole, and overturned. Love and a passenger, 45-year-old Robert Sanders of Carbondale, were removed from the vehicle by EMS.

All three people were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Perkins was treated and later released. Sanders was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Love later died from his injuries.

The cause and circumstance of the crash are being investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The Jackson County Ambulance Service, Carbondale Township Fire Department, and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office all assisted on the call.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 ½ hours.
